The number 108 is considered a sacred number in Hinduism, Buddhism, and yogic tradition. Malas or Japa beads come in a string of 108 and are used for devotional meditation, mantra, and prayer. With each bead a mantra or prayer is repeated to meet a total of 108.

Hold your mala in your right hand, draped between your middle and index fingers. Starting at the guru bead (the larger bead opposite the tassel), use your thumb to count each smaller bead, pulling it toward you as you recite your mantra. Do this 108 times, traveling around the mala, until you once again reach the guru bead.

Your mantra can be as simple as the word love, something you are thankful for, or a Sanskrit phrase such as “om shanti, shanti, shanti” which represents all encompassing peace.
